Smithfield Baptist Church was founded in 1895. A group of residents tired of traveling to Birdville agreed to form a local congregation.

Smithfield Cemetery is the final resting place of many early settlers of the area. Eli Smith, whom the community was named, was also laid to rest here. The oldest marker dates back to October 13, 1872.
