Title A name given to the resource James and Mabel Shivers' Farm Subject The topic of the resource Farmers Families Pioneers Description An account of the resource The home of James (1884-1945) and Mabel (1882-1972) Shivers’ farm circa 1940s. The farm was located in what is now the 8300 block of Davis Boulevard. The house was later replaced with a red brick home. John Thomas Shivers (1855-1923), James’ father, bought 240 acres of timberland for $13 an acre after arriving from Alabama by wagon train. He built a log cabin near this site. Three generations of Shivers lived on this land. James’ son Johnny (1909-1983) married Aline Bost (1915-2012) lived on the land until their deaths. Descendants of the Shivers still live there today. Title A name given to the resource James Mordecai, Hattie Arwine Anderson, and Children Subject The topic of the resource Farmers Families Pioneers Description An account of the resource James Mordecai and Hattie Arwine Anderson with their 10 children. They were civic and community leaders in the early 1900s in the Birdville and Hurst areas. A portion of their farm and pasture land is now “Restaurant Row” on Bedford-Euless Road, North East Mall, and Loop Interstate 820-Airport Freeway interchange. James M. Anderson (1860-1936) migrated from Indiana to Texas in 1883. Not long after he married Hattie Arwine (1868-1960), from a prominent Hurst family. Title A name given to the resource Jim Cavender Subject The topic of the resource Farmers Pioneers Description An account of the resource Written by Michael E. Patterson: James "Jim" C. Cavender farmed, lived for many years, and died near the present-day Birdville Church of Christ on Birdville Hill. Throughout most of his life, he was known as "Uncle Jim." He was my great-grandfather's brother. Uncle Jim was born in 1869 in Walker County, in north Georgia, not far south of Chattanooga, Tenn. He was the oldest of seven children born to Joseph M. Cavender (1835-1902) and his wife Mary Ann Bryan Cavender (1841-1918). Joe Cavender had joined the Confederate Army with a Tarrant County regiment and had returned to Georgia after the war. He and Jim's mother were married in 1868. When Jim was still a small child, his father moved the family to Bellefonte, Arkansas, where they lived until about 1879. In that year, Joe Cavender and his brother-in-law, W.A. Clements, moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, for a few months, but moved again in 1880 and settled on Big Bear Creek south of Grapevine. There, Jim's father died in 1902. Jim was married to Lena Cobb, a girl who lived near him in the Bear Creek/Pleasant Glade neighborhood. They had one child, May Cavender [Annie May "Maie" Cavender], who lived in Tyler, Texas, in later life. Jim was murdered at his home on Birdville Hill in 1930. He had recently sold a large amount of farm produce, and his family suspected robbery was the motive. His body was hidden under a pile of oats. Jim was living alone at the time. His neighbors heard his milk cows bawling the morning after his death, and when they went to see why Uncle Jim hadn't done his morning milking, they found his body. Since only one person outside the family knew he had the money, family members have always suspected they knew the murderer's identity. No one was ever arrested or brought to trial. Uncle Jim lies buried in an unmarked [now marked] grave in Birdville Cemetery. Title A name given to the resource JoAnn Johnson Trail Dedication Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 2007 Description An account of the resource JoAnn Johnson and her husband James chose North Richland Hills to make their home and raise their family in 1995. JoAnn was first elected to the City Council in 1991 and became the first female Mayor Pro-Tem in North Richland Hills in 1995. In May 2006, after 15 years of service, she retired from the City council with the distinction as the longest-serving Council member in North Richland Hill's History. During her tenure, the city's population doubled. In 1992, with only four parks and few resources to address the needs of the park system, Joann Johnson, along with other council members, advocated and supported a voter-approved half-cent sales tax to improve parks. When JoAnn retired in 2006, North Richland Hills was home to over twenty parks and eleven miles of trails, all made possible by the half-cent sales tax. In 2000 the National Recreation and Park Association awarded the "National Gold Medal" to the city, recognizing North Richland Hills as one of the best park systems in the Nation. Along with her work with Parks and Recreation, JoAnn was instrumental in the development of the city's first "History book."
