Dr. Henry Gilbert (1850-1932) and Mrs. Maggie Gilbert (1862-1946) with granddaughter Maurine Pruitt, later Maurine Shaw. Dr. Gilbert practiced medicine in and around the Smithfield Community in the late 19th Century. He also farmed about 240 acres in the 1890s. Along with others, Dr. Gilbert helped start the Smithfield Baptist Church in 1895. He and Louisa Brown generously drilled a well on the school grounds in the 1890s and spared residents from having to carry water from distant sources.
